Guitar Straps

Ever wonder why guitar straps are adjustable? Let me let you in on a little-known secret of the music industry. I used to work in my Dad's music store growing up. One of the first things I learned about selling musical instruments is the concept of the SKU or "stock-keeping unit." You see, when a music store decides to carry an item in stock, they have to worry about having the right sizes for anyone who comes in. But music stores are less likely to carry an item, if they have to order multiple sizes, because it ties up more money in inventory. Now consider how that affects guitar straps. Once you adjust it, you're likely never going to monkey with it again. So why do you need an adjustable strap? It's not adjustable for you…it's adjustable so your friendly neighborhood music store doesn't have to carry straps in a bunch of different lengths. So, how again does that benefit you? With a custom strap, you get the length that you need, customized for your playing style.

A lot of people have asked us, "Why do you use "English Saddle" leather? Why make straps out of leather that's so stiff?" Here's a little-known secret of the leather industry: soft, supple leather is a LOT weaker and wears out much faster than stiff leather. Latigo leather's tanning process makes for a very strong, durable hide. We use only the finest 9 to 10 oz. hides, just like harness-makers do. When you first get your custom strap, it's going to be stiff. Really stiff. But in a few weeks of wear, it will begin to conform to your body. As it does, it will become a little more supple, while retaining it's strength. We've been told our straps are so strong that a lot of players find they don't need straplocks to retain the strap on their guitars. Now we're not going that far, but saddle leather has been used for hundreds of years for all sorts of tack. It's a safe bet that it will work for your guitar, too.

Our guitar straps are pre-measured and pre-cut right here at Guitar Furniture's world HQ. We finish the edges and throw in a concho. Why a concho? It's a great place to tuck a couple of picks. Oh, and it looks cool on stage, in kind of a "there's a new sheriff in town" way. We offer our straps in 1 1/2", 2", 2 1/2" and 3" widths, made from English saddle leather. We've found that a really rich, stiff leather will last a lifetime, and the latigo hides we use are beyond compare. It may take a fortnight (I always wanted to use that word in marketing copy) to break it in, but once you do, you'll have a strap that fits your body like a glove.

Dunlop dual-action Straplok

A word about break-in…and breakage. Collectively, we have accumulated over 50 years of experience in the business of music and manufacturing. We've got a permanent Jones for great design and elegant solutions. And there's nothing like seeing your $3,500, handmade acoustic or vintage Strat go crashing to the ground because of a strap that just won't stay strapped-on. Strap locks are a great solution. We've tried just about every brand on the market today. And we've found ONE brand that we like better than all the others. Dunlop. (We don't get paid to say that, or get a better deal on them. They're just better.) With Dunlops, you don't have to worry about the strap lock falling off the strap (like Schallers have, in my experience). They have a very positive "CLICK" when they lock. And they use a replacement button that fits in the same hole you already have drilled in your guitar – one that can be used with a non-straplocked strap in a pinch. None of the other designs can say that. Oh, and they come in Black Oxide, Brass, Nickel, and Gold plate. They are only an additional $20 a set, and they will save your guitar. Think of them as the cheapest insurance you'll ever buy.

We can make your strap as short as you like, and as long as 60". We measure the straps from strap hole to strap hole, lengthwise, so a 52" strap would end up measuring around 54", as we add an inch on either end. We have a variety of chochos from which you can choose, or you can contact us if you have something in mind you don't see here. NOTE: if you don't specify a concho, our default selection is the "Ranger Star." If you don't want a concho, you MUST tell us in the "special instructions." For a modest additional fee, we also offer a variety of customized, personalization options, including a variety of colors, embossings and toolings.
